REALISM

MINSAN LANG SILANG BATA

Multi awarded documentary film, "Minsan lang silang Bata" garnered so many awards. This just showed how it touched many hearts and made them realize the innocence of children, how fragile they were.

In this docu, it showed how realism could change people's perspectives about something. As for me, some parts made me feel frustrated and guilty.  I dont like to eat meat after seeing the docu during the first few parts but later on when i knew what actually the topic was, then i became so attentive watching the docu.

I commend that this docu will be shown to all people especially the parents so that they would be aware of the things that they should do to help their children succeed.

REPRESENTATION

WEST SIDE STORY

Representation is one of the techniques of making a film more dramatic and full of stories and emotions. Film makers create stories through the experiences they had from the world. They later make story from it and share it to the world in a creative way.

In the movie "West Side Story" where it talked about the rivalry The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks, from Puerto Rico, are taunted by the Jets, a Caucasian gang. The young protagonist, Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.

How were the boys represented in this movie?

Well. for me, the boys in the movies were the symbol of hardship and rivalry. Boys before are much more masculine and had firm hold on their decisions. The boys were very particular on having power and authority. They needed to experience superiority.

How were the girls represented in this movie?

The girls in contrast were much inferior with the boys. They were not as powerful as the boys. When in love, the girls should follow what their olders would want for them.

MISE EN SCENE

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

Mise en scene is a french word which means "placing on stage."  It is an expression used to describe the design aspects of a theatre or film production.. It is also commonly used to refer to multiple single scenes within the film to represent the film. Mise-en-scène has been called film criticism's "grand undefined term".

In the movie, Pride and Prejudice, this was shown.

SET DESIGN AND COSTUME
The set design refers to the decor of the the set, or how it’s dressed, comprising mainly of the furniture, props, and the set itself. Instead of just placing objects here and there, the director must be savvy to fathom how these elements may bear significance in a deeper level, while also emphasizing themes, creating meanings, and provoking thoughts.

The era where this should be was achieved. Each scene was appropriate from pops down to the costume. The way the characters carried their dresses, they were all attractive especially the girls.

CHARACTERIZATION 101

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE

Characterization is a crucial part of making a story true and persuading. In order to interest and move readers, characters need to seem real. Authors achieve this by providing details that make characters individual and particular. Good characterization gives readers a strong sense of characters' personalities and complexities; it makes characters vivid, alive and believable.

Little Miss Sunshine is  a road film about a family who with so much differences can still be together as one. Because of this, i would like to talk about characterization. It is very important when making a film. Each character, major or minor is essential to the the whole plot of the film. Characterization is a literary element that reveals the description of  every character in the story.

CASTS

Greg Kinnear as Richard Hoover

Steve Carell as Frank Ginsberg
Toni Collette as Sheryl Hoover (née Ginsberg)
Paul Dano as Dwayne Hoover
Abigail Breslin as Olive Hoover
Alan Arkin as Edwin Hoover

In the film, some scenes were boring, well actually most of the scenes but what pulled the energy up to make it more exciting was the different character one portrayed in the film. The plot revolved around them. You will not be able to understand why one acted like that if you would not know each of them. Among the characters, my favorite is Olive. Aside from she was the youngest, she was the only member of the family that had confidence and positivism left. She joined little miss sunshine to fulfill her dreams not knowing that contest would make her family united again. Her family was full of insecurities. They needed to get through any struggle just to make sure to renew and start again.

DIEGESIS IT IS!

PAGDADALAGA NI MAXIMO OLIVEROS

The movie, "Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" or in its english version, "The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros" is all about a gay teen who is torn between his love for a young cop and his loyalty to his family. Maxi is a 12-year-old effeminate gay boy who lives in the slums with his father and brothers who steal just to earl a living. The story primarily revolves around the conflict between his love for handsome young police officer Victor, and his family's illegal livelihood.

In our Film Criticism class, we discussed about DIEGESIS, a part of a film that is no longer incorporated or shown because its already understood. Some parts of the movie are needed to be cut not because they are not important but because they are not necessary to be part of it. People nowadays are intelligent enough to find clues and guides to be able to understand the story.

In this very realistic movie, there were some peak moments where DIEGESIS was shown.

1. THE DEATH OF MAXI'S MOTHER
In the film, there was just an old picture of Maxi's mother with a lighted candle at the altar. As an audience, you could say that his mother is dead already in our traditional context.

2. THE BURIAL OF MAXI'S FATHER
It was not shown but one thing that made the viewers know that his father was already buried was that the picture of Maxi's father was placed beside his mom's at the altar.

3. LOVE OF MAXI TO VICTOR
Maxi had crush on Victor. It was clearly shown in the movie but what was not was that the love of Maxi became the cause of everything. That love was the reason why the plot of the story became interesting.
